Manchester City defeated holders Liverpool in an entertaining fourth-round tie at Etihad Stadium to reach the last eight of the Carabao Cup.

City led on three separate occasions and sealed a quarter-final place when Nathan Ake headed in Kevin de Bruyne’s inviting cross at the far post.

Erling Haaland’s early goal for City had been cancelled out by Fabio Carvalho and, although Riyad Mahrez restored the hosts’ lead less than a minute into the second period, Mohamed Salah quickly responded for Liverpool to make it 2-2.
