Samira Umar, wife of the kidnapped lecturer of the Taraba State University, Buba Umar, has revealed how she pleaded with the abductors to kidnap her and her little child in place of her husband but was turned down.

Samira, who on Monday narrated how her husband was kidnapped at the early hours of Sunday from their apartment located in the staff quarters of the institution, said ” I pleaded with them to go with me and my child, they refused, insisting that my husband was their target.”

The hoodlums whom DAILY POST, learnt stormed the lecturer’s residence at about 12.15 am on Sunday, succeeded in going away with their major target after several gunshots which debarred security operatives from repelling them.

According to her, “When I finally opened the door for them, I told them to go with my little child and I, but they insisted that it was my husband they came for.”

Narrating how they would have found it cumbersome to go with her husband but for the gunshots that rented the air, Samira beckoned at the security agencies to help her and her family rescue her husband unhurt.

Though some policemen, according to her, went after the abductors shortly after making away with their target, their efforts, she said, did not yield the much needed results as the policemen, according to her, only came back with the charms and alcoholic drinks which she claimed were left behind by the kidnappers.

She added that the family were yet to know the whereabouts of their breadwinner as the abductors are yet to make any contacts.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe, wondered how the abductors succeeded despite the massive presence of security operatives in the quarters.

He said, “This is a very sad story. I am so sad and surprised that this happened again, and I know that we have police personnel, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), our security outfit and vigilante members hired by the institution to keep their premises safe.”

Despite the availability of the aforementioned security architectures, he felt sad that the hoodlums still went ahead to carry out their plans.

Reiterating the determinations of the leadership of the University not to be deterred, plans to go back to the drawing board and put in place more security apparatus to halt future occurrences, he said have become necessary.

On their part, the state police command, through the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), David Misal, said the command is leaving no stone unturned to track down the perpetrators, stating that “we are on the trail of the kidnappers.”
